Twenty-two of the world’s best Yamaha technicians on show at WTGP 2025

Yamaha Motor has staged the 2025 World Technician Grand Prix (WTGP) at its headquarters in Japan, bringing together 22 Yamaha-certified motorcycle technicians from 19 countries and territories to compete for the title of the world’s number one Yamaha motorcycle technician.

The 2025 WTGP marked the first running of the prestigious global contest in seven years, following postponement during the COVID-19 pandemic. Competitors earned their places by winning regional qualifiers, then travelled to Japan to test their abilities across a wide range of real-world service scenarios under intense time pressure.

Held as part of Yamaha Motor’s 70th anniversary commemorations, WTGP 2025 also showcased the company’s commitment to consistent service standards worldwide through the Yamaha Technical Academy (YTA)—a globally unified training program that supports Yamaha’s service network across 180 countries and territories.

After extremely close contests in two categories, the winners were announced:

  • Sports Model class: Liam Coffey (United Kingdom), a veteran technician with more than 25 years’ experience
  • Commuter Model class: Juan Cruz Lunad Rocha (Argentina), who claimed the No.1 title after a standout performance

At the awards ceremony, Yamaha Motor President Motofumi Shitara congratulated all competitors, reinforcing the vital role technicians play in ensuring customers enjoy their Yamaha experience with safety, comfort and confidence—so they choose Yamaha again.

President Shitara also confirmed the next World Technician Grand Prix is scheduled for 2027, encouraging technicians to take their learnings home and continue building Yamaha’s global fanbase through outstanding service.

This year’s WTGP drew global attention and the excitement was palpable at the venue. I attended the award ceremony myself, and seeing the international roster of competitors’ joy, tears, and mutual respect for each other brought Kando for me as well. Seeing these technicians’ passion for and devotion to honing their skills made me realize anew how their expertise puts smiles on customers’ faces and enriches their motorcycling lives. It also gave me a deeper respect for the thousands of Yamaha technicians working around the world. The next WTGP is scheduled to be held in 2027.
